[Tone 1. Shiga: The Sea of Niho] 〜 This muddy vesture of decay 〜
“...All done?”
A few minutes later, Kai, muttering these words to his SIGMA sd Quattro H, exhaled a sigh of satisfaction, lowered the heavy camera body, and began detaching the lens.
“Kai-san, after you clicked the shutter just now, haven’t you been waiting for ages? The screen is still spinning.”
“Ah? Of course it is. The memory of tens of millions of years of rock that this sensor just swallowed—the Foveon RAW data—is ridiculously heavy. Writing a single shot easily takes more than ten seconds.”
“Ten...?! It’s practically moving backward in time, completely against the evolution of smartphones...”
As Kaho stood there frozen, Kai narrowed his smoky-quartz eyes and let out a dry smirk.
“And that’s exactly what makes it so brilliant.”
“...Eh?”
“You press the shutter. The data is so heavy the camera freezes. For those ten-odd seconds, I’ve got no choice but to stand there and wait... But it’s precisely during that ‘time when I can do nothing’ that the rock in front of me whispers: ‘Hold on. Calm down, and just look at me.’ Modern mirrorless cameras that shoot dozens of frames a second, spray-and-pray style, can never experience the luxury of this wait. SIGMA doesn’t just ‘evolve’; it deepens.”
Hearing this, Kaho thought, Honestly, SIGMA believers really are a bunch of absolute freaks... and yet, as a designer, she felt a quiet, profound sympathy for his stubborn, uncompromising aesthetic.
“...Right. That’s enough of the Earth’s memory for now. Next is your fabric.”
Kai reached into the depths of his kit bag and pulled out another black body—the LUMIX S1R.
